Crystarium Expansion: January Monthly Theme

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you all had a good celebration of the end of the last year and the beginning of the new; and that you are not feeling too tender today! :P

New Year notwithstanding, the first of the month means it's time for our new monthly theme! This month, the theme is: Divergence.

The modern meaning of Divergence is traveling apart, and certainly at the conclusion of FFXIII our ladies' paths had diverged. The best part about two people traveling apart, though, is the reunion when they meet again... do you follow the FFXIII-2/Lightning Returns canon, or do you have a different idea of how they meet again?

An older meaning of Divergence is simply a disagreement or difference, and that our ladies have in plenty! There are major turning points in FFXIII where things come to a head - in the Fifth Ark, for example, or in Orphan's Cradle, where the ladies have it out, but there are also plenty of other opportunities for them to squabble. Is their argument serious? Or is their bickering a familiar dance?

It's up to you! But however you decide to explore the theme this month, don't forget to have fun ♥

Crystarium Expansion: December Monthly Theme

Hello all!

For our members located in the States, I hope you had 1) a successful NaNoWriMo!; 2) lots of delicious food!; and 3) a sane start to the December craziness.

For everyone located outside of the US, I hope you're all having a lovely start to your December! I seem to recall that it was pretty much same-as-always in Japan, since everyone really just starts revving up for the New Year instead. I hope it's the same where you are, with minimal amounts of consumer-related craziness.

It's that time again! Time for a new monthly theme! And the theme for this month is... Innocence!

It seems a fitting garb title/theme for December, given the Christian ideas that pop up throughout this season. And there are some interesting connotations for our ladies, as well. After all, Fang tried to take on the burden of Ragnarok for Vanille to save Vanille's innocence--and Lightning might have some interesting takes on the idea, as well, considering she went into the Guardian Corps at such a young age.

What's it like, being born, being abandoned, and then being raised to kill? What does that do to their sense of innocence, their sense of self, their sense of salvation?

Then on the other side of things, there's also a much more humorous take on this theme: being naughty and being nice. XD I can think of all kinds of shenanigans for the ladies to get into along this line--but I want to see how you all think it would go!

Crystarium Expansion: November Monthly Theme

Hello, everyone~

It is now the first of November, which means though who are NaNoWriMoing (...that's a verb now, apparently) have started frantically typing words while the rest of us cheer them on, possibly by bringing them tea/cocoa/coffee. Seriously, if you live with someone who is participating in NaNoWriMo, bring them their beverage of choice. They will be grateful.

I'm taking a break from it myself, but I've been enjoying Theatrhythm: Curtain Call. I was pleased to see an increase of songs from FFXIII, and a number of songs from the other two games in the Lightning Saga, too. I'm just sad that neither Valkyrie!Lightning nor Fang are available as chibis to unlock.

Anyway, that has little enough to do with our theme this month: Heartstealer.

That's right, our theme for this month is inspired by the garb that itself was inspired by Locke and Zidane, and tends to make Light look a bit more flirty than normal.

Most often when we see Lightning, she's not really up for flirtation. She's got serious business on her mind, like saving Serah or figuring out the best way to undo Fang's sari. So what would get Lightning to be a little flirty? What kind of flirt would she even be?

Or take it around from the other side, and let Fang ply Lightning with all her flirtatiousness with all she's got. ♥

As always, the monthly theme is not meant to be restrictive in any way--just a prompt. In the meantime, I hope everyone has a great November!

Crystarium Expansion: October Monthly Theme

Hi all, welcome to October!

With a new month comes of course our new theme. This month's theme is: Crescent Moon.

The moon has long been associated with women, femininity and feminine power. A crescent moon is a moon in transition, moving from one state to another. It's a moon at low ebb, neither at the height of its power nor at its weakest. Is the crescent moon here, then, waxing or waning? And what might that mean for our ladies?

In a more literal sense, Pulse doesn't have a moon; doesn't, of course, except for Cocoon. Given Cocoon's relatively low altitude, it stands to reason that it wouldn't experience the same kind of lunar cycles that we are familiar with. Perhaps the crescent refers to the crack in its shell, all the way back from the War of Transgression? Or maybe we're back to metaphor, referring to the growing or diminishing of the power of Cocoon, perhaps as a representation of the fal'Cie? Are we following Fang, five hundred years past, gathering her strength as she prepares to go to War against Cocoon's strength? Or perhaps Lightning, running for her life through the frozen waves of Lake Bresha with her new l'Cie companions?

Whatever your reading of the theme, or whether you take your inspiration there or elsewhere, good luck with your creations this month!

Crystarium Expansion: September Monthly Theme

Hi everyone! Hope you're all well :)

Let's get right into it! The monthly theme for September is: Heat Haze of Time.

This theme is a little crunchy. We've got Heat Haze first up - a haze is where dry particles obscure visibility, so things like smoke, dust, ash in the air would count. Perhaps even crystal particles, like those in Eden, after the destruction of Orphan's Cradle...? How badly does the dust stick in Fang's throat when they're in Oerba again, and the dry earth has no flowers to hold it down?

A heat haze, however, is something slightly different - that shimmering in the air when it's hot out, the false mirage images on asphalt, and the distortion of vision caused by heated exhaust fumes. Or perhaps even a Firaga? How does Lightning feel, out patrolling the steppe and thinking she's caught a glimpse of Fang, returned at last - but when the shimmer of the Firaga clears, turns out there was nothing after all?

Heat Haze of Time then, could be the shimmer or distortion caused by time travel, or by the effects of the timeline corruption. What kind of effects has the distortion had on Fang, or on Lightning?

Crystarium Expansion: August Monthly Theme

Hello everyone~

This month's theme is Turbulence.

When we often think of turbulence, we think of it as chaos wrought by circumstances in our lives--war, battle, natural disasters, really, really bad dating situations... That's something that our ladies have seen plenty of in their lives, and might make for a chance to get into their heads. After all, war, battle--that they can handle. Natural disasters, though? How do you stop something that you can't fight?

...and I'm pretty sure both of them have been through bad dating situations. XD Possibly together. Depends on your characterization of them!

But there's the original definition of turbulence, too. Violent movement of air or water--it's that thing that makes your plane flights far more interesting than they should be. Considering both our ladies have ties to the air--Fang by her elemental strengths, Lightning by her very nature, her choice of name, and what storms represent--and ties to the water--in Oerba and Bodhum, both waterside towns--turbulence is a very real thing in their lives, too.

In almost any case, turbulence is about a conflict. Take this and run with it--what kind of conflict will Fang and Lightning face? How will they overcome it? Together, separately?

And as usual, our monthly themes are only prompts. >^_^< Here's hoping it helps you to create wonderful things!

Crystarium Expansion: July Monthly Theme

Hi everyone! We're halfway through the year already, I can hardly believe it. Where did the time go?

July of course brings a new monthly theme. This month, the theme is: Vengeance.

Vengeance was one of the main plotlines of the first two games for many characters, but here of course we're focused on the ladies. Vengeance drove Lightning to fight for her sister, and it drove Fang to fight against the vipers' nest of Cocoon. Is it time for a character study of our ladies?

Or maybe something has injured (or taken) someone, and it's up to the ladies to get them back. Is Fang injured? And why is Lightning suddenly taking it so personal?

Or (for a more lighthearted take), just how much is Fang going to regret starting that prank war?

Whatever you end up creating this month, whether it fits the theme or not, just remember to have fun! ♥

Crystarium Expansion: June Monthly Theme

Hello everyone~!

It's June, which of course means that it's time for a new monthly theme~

So! Continuing with our motif of garbs from Lightning Returns, this month our theme is Dust and Shadow. Obviously, if one sticks with LR, then this garb tends to evoke the imagery of the desert where Lightning reunites with Fang, but the name also tends to remind me of Oerba.

What does that imagery evoke for you? Or, perhaps more importantly, what does that evoke for Fang? For Lightning? Their sense of the passage of time, or in the case of LR, the cessation of it?

As always, the monthly theme is just a prompt to help you get your fandom on. We always appreciate whatever ya'll can share with us! Just have fun!

Crystarium Expansion: May Monthly Theme

Hi everyone, I can't believe it's May already! Here in Australia it is already getting pretty cold at night, nearly time to dig out the thick doona! For our northern hemisphere folks I hope it's warming up for you where you are :)

Well with a new month comes a new monthly theme. This month's theme is Dark Muse.

A muse is generally a person/personage who inspires another, and were traditionally female. Lightning and Fang work and fight together in the game/s, but do they inspire each other? And if so, how?

This month's prompt also suggests a darker potential interpretation - are we talking dark and seductive creatures of the night? Is Lightning a magical detective trying to catch the dark-haired temptress of a thief? Is Fang chasing after that Sidhe with the pink hair who always dresses in black? Is it time for a vampire AU?! (Sparkles optional.)

As always the theme is a suggestion to be taken up or not as the muse strikes you (:P). Just remember, whatever you may create, to have fun ♥

Crystarium Expansion: April Monthly Theme

Hi hi~

It's April 1st, so I hope you all are watching out for potential fool's day shenanigans!

This post is a real deal, though, as we announce our new theme for a new month: Ambivalence!

velithya and I thought that, following up on last month's theme, and in keeping with the release of the last game in the FFXIII saga (mini-series?), that each theme will be based on one of the garbs in Lightning Returns. Ambivalence is the name for Equilibrium in the Japanese version, and it makes sense to let the default garb also be the first theme for this group.

Ambivalence is likely a feeling that our heroes experienced many times during their journeys. From Fang's awakening after her 500 year sleep to find she and Vanille were still alive, only to NOT be able to remember their Focus or how they had been put to sleep to begin with--to Lightning's decision to recruit her sister's help, knowing it would put her in danger--there's any number of times when the ladies might have been torn by their feelings. As always, how do you think they felt about each other? Whenever replaying through the Palumpolum sequence in FFXIII, it always strikes me that Fang and Lightning's jaunt through the city together had to be fraught with ambivalence on both sides, and that sometimes seems the case when they reunite in Lightning Returns, as well.

Of course, the theme is a prompt--whatever gets your gears turning and your minds producing wonderful things! Have fun, and enjoy a great April!

Good evening everyone! How is everyone enjoying Lightning Returns? Speaking personally I have been somewhat derailed by university and am only two days in, although I know my co-mod soranokumo has finished the game. I'll get there soon! In the meantime please remember our spoiler policy for the game - all spoilers to be under a cut until April 1st.

Let's get right into it this month with our theme: "What the hell are you wearing?!"

One of the features of the new game is of course the different garbs that Lightning can wear. Some of them are gorgeous! Some of them are less gorgeous. And some of them are... well. yes. best left unseen, really. What is Lightning wearing here?

Or of course, someone else could be doing the dressing up? (Or dressing down :P)

Crystarium Expansion: February and Spoiler Policy for Lightning Returns

Hello~!

It's that time again--we're expanding the crystarium with a new monthly theme for February, and the theme is: ~*~WILDCARD~*~

That's right! It seems appropriate with the upcoming release of Lightning Returns and some kind of conclusion (whether it's going to be as bonkers as I think it might be or not) to the whole saga, that this be a month to let your muse go crazy and write what you like. If you're like me and you're pretty sure that your own personal canon is going to be restricted to the first game, then why not keep on writing your own vision of what comes after? Or maybe you're really super-excited about all the possibilities Fang could have with Lightning's crazy new garbs, and want to write about Fang and Lightning's joyous reunion in the upcoming game.

Fang: "We've got to save Vanille but if I don't kiss you I think I might die first. C'mere."

So let loose, have fun, and share with us whatever you come up with!

And of course, with the release of a new game... Since Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is coming out in most other territories outside of Japan this month, we ask for a NO SPOILER policy for the game be held until April 1st.

Our NO SPOILER policy is pretty simple. If you're posting anything with spoilers about Lightning Returns, it must be clearly marked as such and hidden behind a cut.

Crystarium Expansion: January Monthly Theme

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone has had a fabulous Christmas/holiday time. It's 2014 now which brings us another month closer to the International releases for Lightning Returns. Six weeks away! I can't wait :)

As it's January we have a new sentence for you. This month's sentence is:

"Get behind me."

The easiest interpretation of this sentence is protection, someone trying to shield someone else from some kind of harm. Who needs protecting, and why do they need help? What's happened to Fang, or Lightning? (Or are they protecting someone else together?)

Or perhaps they're in some kind of competitive situation and are trying to beat the other to the finish. Which lady will end up eating dust?

Maybe they're toasting the end of a hard year, like many of us are doing, throwing away the bad times and focussing on the good things to come in the upcoming year.

Or maybe they're in the bedroom, with the lights down low...

As always, where you go with the sentence is totally up to you. Just don't forget to have fun! ♥

Hi everyone!

Well it's December now and speaking for myself at least that means my local release of Lightning Returns is only two and a half months away. It feels like FOREVER! I'm pretty excited about the alternate outfits that will be available in the game especially the Samurai Armour! I hope that it's available in Australia *crosses fingers*

With a new month of course comes a new sentence. The sentence for December is:

Sometimes she liked to lay on the jetty, late at night, and watch the glow of Cocoon, thinking --

Is this Fang, pre-War of Transgression, stealing out of the orphanage at night? The other kids, although some of them are getting too old to be kids anymore, make too much noise when she's trying to sleep, shuffling and snoring and she just wants a moment of peace. She's getting too old to be a kid herself, really, but she was never a child; the orphan of Yun, grown up too fast. There's a war coming and everyone knows it -- she's not the first child who's seen her clan destroyed, and she's not going to be the last.

Or maybe it's Lightning, in Bodhum, just off a late shift with the Corps. She's tired; it was a long day of petty irritations and tedious bullshit, and she's physically exhausted. She's trying, she really is, but with every day that passes it becomes clearer to her that she's failing in all sorts of unexpected ways. She doesn't know how to be a parent -- Serah's taken up with some hooligan, and she doesn't know how to have that conversation with her, where she talks about her concerns without it descending into a screaming match.

Is it Fang during the War, fal'Cie-given power shivering through her veins? Everyone's hopes are resting on her and Vanille, and sometimes she wonders if her shoulders are wide enough to bear the weight. She's supposed to be the hero, the "Chosen One", but sometimes she wonders if Anima hadn't made a mistake after all. She can frame Cocoon with her hands, lying back against the wooden boards of the jetty, but it's an illusion; she's only grabbing air. How is she supposed to make a scratch on the real thing?

Perhaps it's Lightning, AU past the Fall of Cocoon, lonely in Oerba. She's marking time, securing farmland against monsters some days and arguing with Rosch at the new Pulsian Council in others, but when the day is over and the sun sinks beneath the waves, everyone goes home to their loved ones. Everyone except her. So here she is, staring up at the crystal spire where her heart rests, waiting until she's tired enough that she thinks she might be able to sleep.
Waiting for her heart to wake.

Or maybe it's Fang, thinking--

"Hey," Lightning says, face coming into view upside-down, hair swinging over her shoulder tickling the end of Fang's nose. "I was wondering where you were."

"Nah," Fang says, smiling, and stretches her arms up over her head, arms brushing against Lightning's boots. "You knew where I was."

Lightning smiles, the glow from the crystal spire lightning points in her hair; in the Yun clan pendant that hangs around her neck; the bracelet of troth around her wrist.

"Yeah," Lightning says, and steps over Fang's arms to settle on the jetty beside her, hip to hip, shoulder to shoulder in the night. Together. "I know."

Crystarium Expansion: November Monthly Theme

Hello all!

Hope if you celebrate Hallowe'en you've properly recovered for either eating lots of candy or handing out lots of candy. We're now moving into November, which of course means several things (I mentioned them last theme, but they bear repeating!):

1) Lightning Returns will be released in Japan this month!
2) NaNoWriMo starts today!
3) We get a new monthly theme!

As has been the trend so far, this time around we're giving a starter sentence. What you do with the sentence (even if that's not using it at all!) is up to you!

Light broke through the clouds.

Why is light breaking through clouds? Or why is Light breaking through clouds? Is it the end of the world type scenario? (Again?) Or are Lightning and Fang practicing their skydiving? (Plausible!)

Take it and run with it! As always, we look forward to seeing the results of your endeavors~

...Okay, it is now October 14th, October 15th for some of you awesome people. Argh. My apologies.

But we do have a theme for the month! As with our other recent themes, we've got a "first sentence" for you to take as you will:

She's nervous, but that's only to be expected on a day like today.

Who is she? Why is she nervous? What's going on? A battle? A date? A battle/date? As always, the monthly themes are meant to inspire rather than be a strict prompt, so feel free to take this and run with it.

Also, November is coming up, which is big thing for several reasons but two in particular:

1) Lightning Returns gets released in Japan!
2) NaNoWriMo is held!

How many of you are excited about either of those things, and who will be participating? Anyone daring to get a Japanese copy of the game?

2013 keeps catapulting onward, leaving August behind and zooming into September. Oddly enough, my brain keeps trying to get me to type "October." It's probably the sudden reappearance of pumpkin spice flavored things showing up now. (At least in the US? I'm not sure if pumpkin spice flavors are a thing outside of the US. I don't recall seeing it in Japan except for KitKats for Halloween.)

Anyway, another month forward ALSO means we're getting closer to the Japanese release of Lightning Returns ~~and the return of Fang! Who is totally returning to the inside of Lightning's bikeshorts~~. And so, riding the wave of the trailer and lovely screenshots showing our ladies, we bring you...

September's Monthly Theme: Fighting next to her again, for the first time in Etro knows how long, was exhilarating.

Crystarium Expansion: August Monthly Theme

Hi everyone! Suddenly, it's August already... did someone cast Haste on everything? Oh well, let's get right into it!

The sentence for August is: The last thing she needed right now was that.

For starters, who's narrating this story? Is it Fang? Lightning? Vanille? Yeul? That lady who wanders around Academia with a picture of the Director I mean Mr Estheim in her wallet?

The second consideration is what's going on - not only the new situation that's come up, but the current situation that's made the new event unwelcome. Has Fang's tendency to sleep wrapped around her lance finally driven Lightning up the wall? Is Lightning's insistence on proper military protocol on all operations a real thorn in Fang's side? Will Vanille kill someone if she walks in on Fang and Lightning making out one more time?

Crystarium Expansion: July Monthly Theme

Hi everyone, apologies for the delay - I caught conflu from a weekend convention and have been asleep for most of the last two days and soranokumo has been out of town.

The sentence for July is: "All those times we were together, and now you think you've got to be some Saviour by yourself?"

This month's sentence is inspired by the recent E3 clips from Lightning Returns - what happens when Fang encounters Lightning in this new world? (I vote for KISSING! But more likely punching. AND THEN KISSING <.<)

But that doesn't mean you have to start there - Lightning's called Fang out through FFXIII about taking things on herself, all the way through their last encounter in Orphan's Cradle.

Ultimately, whether it's Fang or Lightning about to charge off single-mindedly into danger (or stupidity) is up to you! Enjoy yourself this month, may the love of our ladies protect you from conflu, and don't forget to have fun ♥

Crystarium Expansion: June Monthly Theme

Hi everyone!

As we mentioned last month, we're changing up the monthly themes. For the next twelve months, instead of a new theme each month, we'll be presenting you with a first sentence.

Again, like all the monthly themes before, if what you end up writing doesn't use the sentence that's okay. But we hope that the sentences inspire you to create works of art, be they fiction or artwork or anything you like.

The monthly sentence for June is: "The ship loomed above them, and only one thing was certain: It belonged neither to Pulse, nor Cocoon."

The dramatic music is optional, but our beloved characters are in for a surprise with this sentence for sure! Is the new world on Pulse under threat? Has the Historia Crux landed them so far outside their own borders that nothing seems familiar? Have our beloved ladies just had too much to drink?

Crystarium Expansion: May Monthly Theme

Hi hi~!

We've got a fun theme for you this month (and by fun, I mean possibly horrible or delightful): Chaos.

Obviously, "Chaos" takes on its own meaning within FFXIII series canon by its association with Etro, death, and the "spirit" that Etro granted every human. I was always intrigued that you see Caius wielding Chaos and in that sense it always seems to be given a negative connotation, but although Etro worked to hold back Chaos, there was always the implication that it was a positive force as well (again, part of the spirit that she granted humanity?).

Which works for me, because I dislike things to be entirely black and white, and chaos itself is not necessarily a negative thing.

So what do you think? What does Lightning or Fang think, since they're having to deal with so much of Etro's mess, in their own ways?

For some crossover-type fun, you can also take this theme and run it in with Dissidia 012~~~ Go on, go on, you know you want to.

And then, you can also take the prompt at its simplest level. What happens when certain plans go awry? For both Fang and Lightning, their lives were thrown into chaos when they (and their loved ones) became l'Cie, but you can also look at other plans. Maybe Fang has something romantic in mind for Lightning (or vice versa) and every time she tries to set it into motion, Snow opens his mouth. Or Hope. Or perhaps Sazh is too wise on the matter! Perhaps there is a stampede of chocobo? Or perhaps Vanille starts the stampede of sheep by going on a "shearing" spree in hopes of fluffy wool.

Speaking of Chaos, enjoy this monthly theme because we're gonna be switching things up next month with a different take on the prompts. And as always, there's no time limit, no due date, no actual requirement that you stick to the prompt (perhaps thinking of Chaos leads to an interesting take on Cosmos/Order, after all!). The only requirement is that you have fun!

Before we get to the monthly theme, the Lightning Returns website has some new screenshots out - some new pictures of Lightning including some in-game shots with her alternate costumes, and also some pictures of a new world area. Six more months to wait until the game!

The monthly theme for April is: Blossoming Love

In the northern hemisphere it's the middle of Spring, and the trees should be covered in brilliant green, flower buds open and blooming. Are Fang and Lightning in Oerba, surrounded by riots of colour as they have a picnic in the meadow?

Or maybe they're still on their journey, on the Steppe or maybe Cocoon, and they're glancing at each other, maybe when they're looking, maybe only when they're looking away, and thinking, and wondering, maybe...? What if I...? Does she feel...?

As always, you're not constrained by the theme, feel free to create anything and everything that you wish! Just remember to have fun ♥
